The New Jersey music scene has been fading with the onslaught of cover bands and pop music groups coming to fame and it seems the club seen has faded away. If you take a look, at most of the upcoming bands that have some sort of a following from other countries and the states it seems most tours just skip over New Jersey. I am not sure if it’s the people, age limits or just the stipulations from the venues or the bands that turn their backs on fans wishing they could see some of these great band that shun New Jersey.
Well recently, some of our staff and me had a chance to go to see our good friend Ray West -- SPREAD EAGLE on his solo mini tour of the East Coast at a club called Dingbatz, a popular Jersey spot. Ray told us he would go on about midnight, so naturally we didn’t want to stand there for a few hours hearing music from bands that we had no interest to hear. Anyway, as we entered the venue about 11pm there was one band left to go on before THE RAY WEST BAND.
As that band entered and started playing to my surprise, I am hearing music and vocals above the norm. A band that actually turned heads as all eyes adjusted to the stage. I have seen a lot of opening bands some good, some bad, but this band blew me away and get this they’re from New Jersey. Yeah let me shit myself, a band that could change the direction of music in NJ. The most captivating vocalist-- Jeff Dixon and band -- LOWBUZ I’ve seen in a long time. You heard the good ole story a band pull out of the Jersey scene from the ruins to build a empire well with some backing LOWBUZ could be that band. I am not building these guys up because I’m from Jersey, it’s they’re that good and the main reason is Jeff Dixon.
LOWBUZ released two prior CD’s “LOWBUZ” in 2003 and “Breaking Point” in 2005 with their new release coming late in 2006 called “On the Inside.” LOWBUZ consists of Jeff Dixon on vocals, Dual guitarists Mike Koenig and Rob Tarulli, drummer L. J. Gravine and bassist Dave Neabore who played in notable bands DOG EAT DOG and MUCKY PUP.
“On The Inside” has five new tracks and the first two releases included as bonus tracks. The opening track “Run Away” is hard hitting right off the bat slamming down the power in the vein of DISTURBED and hints of TOOL and LIVE, LOWBUZ wants to be noticed. Dixon has a superlative voice and he will mesmerize you with his range which transverses the soft melodic sounds through to the aggressive screams. The dual guitars of Mike Koenig and Rob Tarulli on “Make Me Whole” shatter the Jersey images of pretty boys like BON JOVI. LOWBUZ are set forth to bring the sound of Jersey to new heights with quality songs accompanied with impressive vocals.
“Betrayed” is the best track of the five new songs. It has catchy lyrics and with the dual guitars hitting the wawa pedal gives the song a sense of a ballad but very aggressive. “Swallow” is another tune that will uproot the hostility bottled up that needs to be released. The pulsating guitar riffs screaming out and the bass lines by Dave Neabore setting the mood for Dixon’s clear clean vocals makes this one to break loose.
This entire CD is a step in the right direction and labels should be contacting LOWBUZ to sign on the dotted line. If there is a band to resuscitate New Jersey’s terminal club scene from the death’s door… LOWBUZ is the band. Check them out and pick up their CD’s before they‘re out of print. Check the pipes on Mr. Dixon and when you talk about charisma, he’ll be the man.
