My Chemical Romance, which currently consists of band members Gerard Way (Vocals), Mikey Way (Bass), Frank Iero (Guitar), Ray Toro (Guitar), and Bob Bryar (Drums), is an American band from Belleville and Newark, Jersey (except drummer Bob Bryar, who is from Chicago, Illinois).
The band was formed by frontman Gerard Way and ex-drummer Matt Pelissier. The first song they wrote was "Skylines and Turnstiles". Shortly after, guitarist Ray Toro joined, followed by Gerard's brother Mikey Way on bass and guitarist Frank Iero, who was previously in the band Pencey Prep.
In the summer of 2004, the other members kicked drummer Matt Pelissier out of the band for unconfirmed reasons such as he made too many mistakes live and he had an argument with frontman Gerard Way. Their success lead them to believe that they needed a better drummer. Matt said the following about this: "Well I've messed up a few times live and Ray said "we're a different band now at a different level its gotta be good all the time, we're not comfortable with you stage no more we're afraid you'll mess up".
Bassist Mikey Way coined the band's name from a book entitled Ecstasy: Three Tales of Chemical Romance by Irvine Welsh.
The genre of music that the band plays is highly debated, with opinions ranging anywhere from punk to emo. The band members themselves don't like their music being labelled emo because, as Gerard Way puts it, "When we were still unknown we would have been happy if our music would have been considered emo, because it would have helped us to get the chance to play gigs. But those people did not like our music. And now that we are succesful, people would like to call our music emo, but we don't want to have anything to do with them anymore".
The band cites their influences from other groups such as Thursday, Queen, Iron Maiden, The Smiths, Pixies, The Cure, Thrice, and Misfits.
They recorded their first album, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love which was released with Eyeball Records and produced by Geoff Rickly of Thursday. Gerard had written a short story with the title of the album which kind of inspired him.
After the release, they toured with bands such as The Used, Thrice, and Taking Back Sunday.
2004 saw the release of their second album and major label debut Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge which would go platinum a year later. The album contained the singles "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)", "Helena", and their third single from the album, "The Ghost of You".
Since the release, they have underlined the Vans Warped Tour in 2004, headlined the first ever Taste of Chaos and they also were the opening act for Green Day on their American Idiot tour. In 2005, they headlined the Vans Warped Tour 2005 and did their first ever headlining tour with Alkaline Trio.
On March 21, 2006, My Chemical Romance released their DVD entitled Life on the Murder Scene. The 2-DVD and CD package includes their diary from day one until now, live performances, and a previously unreleased song titled "Desert Song".
The first single "Welcome to the Black Parade" for their next album The Black Parade was performed in the VMA's 2006 preshow and on October 15, 2006 went to the number one position of the UK singles chart and held for two weeks. My Chemical Romance had already performed some songs from the next record in the Hammersmith Palais in London. For this next record, My Chemical Romance has chosen to follow the lead of David Bowie, who years ago created an alter-ego named Ziggy Stardust, by creating their own alter-ego: The Black Parade.
The Black Parade is the the bands third studio album. It was released on October 17, 2006 in Puerto Rico; October 19, 2006 in Ireland; October 20, 2006 in Germany; October 23, 2006 internationally; and October 24, 2006 in the United States. Like the band's first two albums, it is a concept album, centering around a cha
